Two Alleged M-Pesa Scammers Apprehended in Embu

The arrest of two individuals suspected of targeting M-Pesa operators in Embu County has been confirmed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Evans Ngui and Jackline Mwende were captured following a coordinated operation on Friday, accused of engaging in card-swiping schemes and embezzling significant sums from their victims.

An investigation was initiated on January 18, 2023, after law enforcement received information that the duo had posed as Safaricom agents at Kithimu trading center, where they targeted a 49-year-old M-Pesa operator. Reportedly, they persuaded the victim to change his till number and illicitly acquired his confidential information in the process.

“Utilizing his particulars, they installed a Safaricom app on their mobile device and withdrew Ksh.24,000 from the till before fleeing the scene,” a statement outlined.

On January 26, the suspects were tracked down to Ngariama area and subsequently apprehended, then taken to Itabua Police Station, where they are currently detained pending further investigations and the pursuit of potential additional accomplices.

The Embu County DCI Head has issued a warning to M-Pesa operators and other business proprietors, advising vigilance against fraudulent individuals masquerading as representatives of reputable companies.
