Official data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveals a staggering rise in motorcycle registrations nationwide. However, in Thika, bicycles have carved out a niche for themselves, defying the trend.
Kevin Maina, a bicycle taxi rider, shared insights into the popularity of bicycles, attributing it to the accessibility and affordability they offer, especially to rural dwellers who might not have the means to purchase motorcycles.
Maina emphasized the competitive pricing and enhanced safety that bicycles provide, making them the preferred choice for many commuters.
David Wanjau, a resident of Kisii Estate in Makongeni, echoed Maina’s sentiments, citing safety concerns associated with motorcycles and the perception of reckless driving among motorcycle operators.
Wanjau highlighted the comparatively lower risk of accidents and minimal damage caused by bicycle-related incidents.
Charles Kimani, another bicycle taxi operator, shed light on the versatility of bicycles, emphasizing their ability to navigate narrow routes inaccessible to motorcycles.
Kimani also outlined the fare structure, indicating varying rates based on distance and luggage, with daily earnings ranging from Sh400 to Sh800 on a good day.
Despite the prevalence of motorcycles in Kenya’s transportation landscape, Thika’s embrace of bicycles as a primary mode of transport underscores the diverse preferences and needs of commuters, highlighting the enduring significance of this eco-friendly and efficient means of getting around.
