Teargas, Roadblocks as Police Stop State House March

Protesters attempting to march to State House were on Monday dispersed after General Service Unit (GSU) officers fired teargas at the junction of Nyerere Road and Mamlaka Road.

The march, organised by parents and relatives of young people killed during the 2024–2025 anti-government protests, had been announced on Sunday.

The families were seeking an audience with President William Ruto, citing what they described as prolonged delays in justice and accountability.

The gathering began early in the morning at Jeevanjee Gardens, where anti-riot police had already been deployed. As the group proceeded towards Procession Way, GSU officers set up a roadblock at the Nyerere–Mamlaka Road intersection.

When protesters attempted to push forward, police reinforced their presence and lobbed teargas, forcing the crowd to scatter.

The families said that as of December 18, 2025—547 days after the death of Rex Masai—no police officer has been held responsible for the killings.

They further faulted the government for slow justice processes and delays in compensation, despite a presidential declaration issued on August 8, 2025, which outlined a framework for compensating victims of police violence dating back to 2017.

According to the organisers, the march was meant to be peaceful. In a formal notification to authorities, the families had urged police to uphold Article 37 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, demonstration, and petition.

The notice stated that participants would carry only flowers and the national flag and requested a police escort to ensure safety and order during the procession.

“This is not a protest but a plea for justice,” the notice read, adding that the families trusted police not to harass, assault, or arrest grieving parents and siblings seeking an audience with the President.
