Speaker Wetang’ula Backs Ruto’s Second Term Bid

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has expressed confidence that President William Ruto is firmly on track to secure a second term, citing the Kenya Kwanza administration’s infrastructure projects and economic reforms as proof of progress.

Speaking during a Women Empowerment Programme in Teso North, Busia County, Wetang’ula said infrastructure development was central to Ruto’s economic recovery agenda and urged Kenyans, especially the youth, to continue supporting the President’s leadership.

He encouraged young people to form groups to access opportunities under the Nyota Programme, which provides training and financial empowerment.

The Speaker commended the government for slashing fertiliser prices from Sh7,000 to Sh2,500, a move he said boosted maize yields and contributed to a bumper harvest in Western Kenya. He also noted that the economy had grown from 4.7 percent in 2024 to over 5 percent in 2025.

Wetang’ula stressed the importance of women in driving inclusive growth, saying that empowering them with resources and skills was key to uplifting households and sustaining national development. He defended the administration’s tough economic policies, arguing that only bold leadership could revive stalled projects and spur meaningful change.

Among the initiatives highlighted was the expansion of the Malaba–Nairobi Dual Highway, which is already under construction in Rironi. Wetang’ula said the project would ease border congestion, enhance trade, and unlock economic potential in the region.

He also pointed to efforts to streamline issuance of IDs and passports, reduce cross-border trade barriers, and strengthen the East African Community Protocol with Uganda. The Speaker praised Presidents Ruto and Museveni for fostering closer ties, saying this would promote business, free movement, and regional harmony.

Urging unity and political maturity, Wetang’ula asked leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and instead rally behind a shared national agenda. He was accompanied by Ugenya MP David Ochieng, who called on the Teso community to build wider alliances, and Butere MP Tindi Mwale, who credited the current government with reviving an economy he said was on the verge of collapse when they took over.
