An 11-year-old girl, identified as Gabriela Atieno, tragically lost her life after allegedly being physically abused by her parents for purportedly stealing Ksh 200 at their residence in Masita village within Bondo sub-county, Siaya County.
The parents, Cornel Ogeno and an unnamed mother, reportedly subjected the young girl to severe caning on Sunday evening in response to the alleged theft.
Siaya County Police Commander, Mr. Cleti Kimaiyo, revealed that the parents continued to beat Gabriela until she lost consciousness. Subsequently, they rushed her to Bondo sub-county hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.
Upon investigation, a nurse at Bondo sub-county hospital reported to the police that the lifeless body of Gabriela displayed multiple bruises when brought to the facility. Law enforcement officers visited the hospital and found the deceased child at the casualty unit with evident injuries.
Mr. Kimaiyo confirmed the incident and announced the arrest of the two parents for further inquiries. The body, bearing visible injuries, has been transferred to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
