FA CUP CLASH

By: Nick Nayma Maina

The progression of the Emirates FA Cup third round is marked by a mix of disappointments and excitement. As big teams advance, others exit the competition, turning their focus to the upcoming season.

Arsenal, bidding farewell to the competition, redirects their attention to the English Premier League and the Champions League, showcasing an alluring brand of football. Meanwhile, Liverpool, considered favorites in the Europa League, secure a spot in the next round after overcoming Mikel Arteta’s lads.

On the 8th of January 2024, the unpredictable boys of Erik Ten Haag are facing 18th placed League One side Wigan Athletic football club under the leadership of Shaun Maloney. The two sides have had a total of 19 meetings in all competitions in which Manchester United has managed 18 wins of the 19.

In the FA cup the two have only faced each other just once in the 2016- 2017 season in which the Reds scooped a 4-0 victory over The Latics. Wigan plays in the third tier of English football while Manchester United plays in the premier League and sitting on the 8th position 14 points behind the league leaders Liverpool.

Heading into the match, Manchester United comes off a 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest,. The streak of poor results for Manchester United leaves their fandom in a state of concern and divided loyalty. However, the Reds with 12 FA Cup victories, hold a strong legacy, while Wigan boasts a triumph in the 2013 FA final against Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City.

Manchester United receives an injury boost with the return of Lisandro Martinez and Carlos Casemiro to training. Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho aim to assert their dominance in the heart of Man United’s attack. The match serves as a significant moment for Manchester United’s co-owners, INEOS, under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
