A video shared by The Star shows sparse human traffic along Moi Avenue, particularly near the National Archives and Kencom bus stop — areas that are normally teeming with commuters heading to different parts of the city.

Most shops within the CBD remain closed, while police have set up roadblocks on key roads leading into the city.

Over the weekend, many businesses fortified their premises with metal grills in anticipation of possible looting incidents.

Some traders also cleared out their merchandise to avoid potential losses similar to those experienced during last week’s demonstrations.

At the roadblocks, both public and private vehicles are being stopped from accessing the city centre, as authorities fear protestors might infiltrate disguised as regular commuters.

Security checks have been mounted on major roads including Waiyaki Way, Kenyatta Avenue, Jogoo Road, Mombasa Road, Thika Road, Kiambu Road, Uhuru Highway, Valley Road, and other feeder routes.

Only government vehicles and those on emergency duties are being allowed through.

The Saba Saba protests, held every year on July 7, mark the anniversary of Kenya’s fight for multiparty democracy.

This year’s protests have been energized by a youth-driven online movement calling for greater government accountability and urgent economic reforms.
