The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended the deadline for filing 2024 income tax returns to July 5, following widespread technical issues that affected the iTax platform on June 30.

In a public statement, KRA announced it will waive all penalties and interest linked to late filing for those affected by the system failure, provided their returns are submitted by the new deadline.
The disruptions were attributed to an overwhelming number of last-minute filers, which caused the online platform to crash and left many unable to file their returns or make payments.
“On June 30, the system experienced technical challenges due to high traffic, preventing some taxpayers from filing their returns,” KRA explained.
The Authority urged taxpayers to utilize the extended period to file returns and clear any pending tax obligations without fear of penalties.
The extension follows an investigation by the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), also known as the Ombudsman, after receiving numerous complaints about the iTax platform’s failure.
The Ombudsman confirmed that users experienced persistent errors that disrupted the filing process.
“We commend KRA for responding swiftly to our concerns regarding the recurring iTax failures, and for waiving penalties and interest on late submissions,” the Commission said.
