Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu faced backlash online after a video emerged showing her vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
The video, initially shared on her social media platforms, depicted her driver attempting to navigate through traffic congestion at a roundabout in Nairobi. Nyamu captioned the video with “Aki Kanairo wewe” expressing frustration with the city’s traffic.
Despite a traffic police officer being present nearby, directing motorists to ease traffic flow, Nyamu’s vehicle caused other motorists traveling in the opposite direction to scatter to make way.
Online commentators criticized Nyamu for obstructing traffic and questioned why the police officer did not intervene. Activist Boniface Mwangi accused her of disrespecting taxpayers who funded her vehicle’s expenses.
DJ Soxxy, a road safety advocate, also questioned why the traffic police officer ignored the situation, suggesting that hazard lights may have influenced the officer’s reaction.
Many expressed concern over the blatant disregard for traffic laws and the dangerous behavior exhibited in the video. Some suggested legal consequences for Nyamu’s driver and even raised concerns about Nyamu’s fitness for office.
