Safaricom has partnered with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to bring a new high-capacity submarine cable connecting Oman and Kenya, a move set to improve digital connectivity and increase internet speeds across East Africa.
The agreement, signed through Meta’s subsidiary Edge Network Services Limited, appoints Safaricom as the landing partner for the project — marking the second Meta-backed undersea cable to reach Kenyan shores.

The entire system will be fully funded by Edge, with licensed operators in both Kenya and Oman managing their respective segments within territorial waters.
According to Safaricom, the investment will strengthen network reliability, reduce latency, and support growing demand for cloud and digital services across the region.
Kenya’s first major submarine fibre-optic cables — TEAMS and SEACOM — landed in Mombasa in 2009, revolutionizing the country’s internet landscape and ushering in the broadband era.
