Pilots Sound Alarm Over Flight Disruptions at JKIA

The Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) has raised concerns about ongoing flight disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and across Kenya’s airspace, citing industrial action by members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), including Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff.

In a statement on Tuesday, KALPA said the strikes have caused widespread operational interruptions, resulting in flight delays, diversions, and cancellations, inconveniencing passengers and stakeholders in the aviation sector.

The association stressed that aviation safety must remain the top priority, warning that prolonged operational disruptions could affect crew scheduling and rest periods, increasing the risk of pilot fatigue.

“Aviation safety is non-negotiable,” KALPA stated, emphasizing strict adherence to Flight Duty Period (FDP) regulations and mandatory rest requirements, which are designed to maintain operations within international safety standards. The pilots warned that operational pressures should never compromise safety limits.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the aviation sector, KALPA called for constructive dialogue to resolve labour disputes, urging all parties to engage in good-faith negotiations. The association noted that failure to engage meaningfully could prolong stalemates and deepen disruptions, ultimately affecting both the industry and travellers.

KALPA concluded by reiterating the importance of balancing operational efficiency with safety, ensuring that the wellbeing of flight crews and passengers is never compromised.
