The demonstrators used stones and branches to block vehicles, prompting police officers to intervene and engage them in dialogue.
The locals complained that the highway has become increasingly dangerous and called for urgent measures to curb the accidents.
Motorists were urged to exercise caution as the blockade caused heavy traffic snarl-ups.
The protest comes after a series of deadly crashes on the road. On July 13, four people—including two motorcyclists, a pedestrian, and a trailer passenger—died in a crash near Nairekia Engare after a trailer lost control.
Just weeks earlier, on June 28, a senior police officer and another victim died in another accident at Maduro, further highlighting safety concerns on the busy road.
