A 14-year-old Form Two student from Akaiga Boys High School in Tigania, Meru County, drowned on Saturday, October 11, 2025, while swimming in River Kithio during a school outing.
According to police, the student was part of a group of 61 learners who had gone for a geography field lesson at Mboroko Forest. On their way back, some of the students decided to take a swim, during which the tragedy occurred.

Efforts by fellow students and locals to save the boy were unsuccessful. Emergency responders later retrieved the body, which was taken to the mortuary for further procedures.
The incident left the school and community in deep sorrow, with residents calling for tighter supervision of students during outdoor activities.
In Migori County, police recovered the body of Brenda Awuor, 22, from River Migori. She had reportedly gone to the river with her four-year-old daughter before drowning. The child said her mother had appeared disturbed before the incident. Police suspect the case may be linked to a growing trend of occult-related deaths in the region.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, detectives are investigating the death of Yatich Yano Ruto, a 20-year-old second-year law student at the University of Nairobi, who is suspected to have died by suicide at his family home on Kirichwa Road.

Police say such cases are increasing nationwide, with most victims being young men. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites causes such as depression, unemployment, academic pressure, and financial or personal stress.
The government has pledged to intensify mental health awareness and support programs to curb the worrying trend.
