Parliament to Gather Public Opinions on Gachagua Impeachment Before Tuesday Hearing

The impeachment motion against Deputy President William Ruto will be shared across all 47 counties on Friday to encourage public participation ahead of its review in Parliament.

Speaker Moses Wetangula announced that the House will take a break from 12 PM to 2 PM on Wednesday to outline the details for the upcoming public engagement scheduled for Friday.

The motion is set to be debated next Tuesday, when the House will decide whether to support or reject it.

Wetangula stated that Gachagua has the right to defend himself either personally or through legal counsel. He emphasized, “It would be unreasonable for any motion to be resolved without involving the public. Judicial rulings have reinforced this principle. Public engagement is crucial in such removal cases.”

To enable public participation, the House will adjourn its sessions on Thursday afternoon, allowing legislators to connect with their constituents.

“The public discussions will take place across the 47 counties, and the House will reconvene tomorrow to allow legal advisors to clarify the process,” Wetangula noted.

The impeachment motion against Gachagua was officially introduced in Parliament by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who alleges over ten violations, including constitutional breaches, corruption, and incitement.

Mutuse presented a list of 291 MPs backing the motion, surpassing the required 117 signatures to meet the constitutional requirement. Speaker Wetangula confirmed that the motion met all necessary criteria for the impeachment process to advance.

“I want to clarify to this House and to the Kenyan public that I harbor no personal grievances against the Deputy President. I am simply performing my duty as a citizen and MP,” Mutuse stated during the session.

The motion details nine charges against Gachagua, including serious constitutional violations, fostering ethnic discrimination, and jeopardizing national unity through divisive rhetoric.

Gachagua is also accused of contradicting government policies and neglecting his responsibilities as Deputy President, particularly in relation to collective Cabinet accountability.

Mutuse defended his actions, stating he has nine witnesses prepared to substantiate each claim. “If the public is deprived of services because of Gachagua, we believe it’s essential to remove him for the good of Kenyans,” he asserted.

In addition to constitutional breaches, the motion claims Gachagua has participated in corruption, money laundering, and misuse of office, which undermines public trust and contravenes anti-corruption laws. “Engaging in corrupt activities and money laundering while in office erodes public confidence and violates the law,” Mutuse concluded.
