In a statement released on Monday, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced that the opposition would meet to discuss what he described as an escalating pattern of political intimidation and harassment.
Kalonzo condemned the reported abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi, calling it deeply troubling.
“We unequivocally condemn the abduction of MP George Koimburi,” said Kalonzo, warning that the incident reflects a dangerous trend in the nation’s politics.
“If an elected MP with state-assigned security can be kidnapped in broad daylight, what safety is left for ordinary Kenyans?” he questioned.
Koimburi was discovered Monday morning abandoned in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Kiambu County. He alleged that he had been beaten after being abducted outside a church on Sunday afternoon by unknown individuals.
The police have distanced themselves from the incident, saying investigations are underway after the MP’s family reported the disappearance.
Authorities are keen to interview Koimburi to understand how he ended up in the plantation and how those who found him were alerted to his whereabouts.
“His phone went off on Friday during an attempted arrest, which was eventually aborted,” a source familiar with the investigation said.
Koimburi was reportedly found unconscious, still dressed in the navy-blue suit he wore on Sunday.
Witnesses said he was taken to Karen Hospital by ambulance.
According to his wife, Ann Koimburi, two plainclothes men pretending to be congregants ambushed the MP and forced him into a Subaru Forester with tampered number plates.
The men allegedly did not identify themselves before driving off with him.
Former Deputy President and Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua also condemned the incident, terming it part of an ongoing crackdown targeting opposition politicians.
