KMPDU Denounces Intimidation of Striking Doctors in Kiambu

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly opposed the intimidation and threats directed at doctors participating in a strike in Kiambu County, warning that any such actions could lead to a nationwide response.

In a statement posted on May 30, 2025, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah called the threats both unlawful and hazardous, stressing that they jeopardize the healthcare system’s credibility and put lives at risk.

“Targeting healthcare professionals for asserting their rights is not only illegal but dangerous. It weakens our healthcare system and endangers public safety,” Atellah said.

His comments came after a meeting with the striking doctors in Kiambu.

Dr. Atellah stated that the doctors are advocating for fair working conditions, professional respect, and a functional healthcare system, including timely promotions and proper medical insurance—rights that are legally protected and upheld by a court ruling affirming their right to strike.

“Rather than responding to these valid demands, authorities are resorting to unlawful threats of dismissal,” he noted.

He reaffirmed KMPDU’s commitment to standing by its members and condemned any effort to silence or coerce them.

“KMPDU sends a clear message: any act of intimidation or retaliation will result in national-level action. Doctors countrywide are prepared to support their colleagues in Kiambu, and we will act decisively to defend their rights,” Atellah warned.

He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue rather than threats. “This is not the time for threats or theatrics, but for responsible leadership.”

Atellah called on all parties to stop the intimidation, respect the court’s decision, and engage in sincere discussions to resolve the crisis.

“How we treat healthcare workers reflects the strength of our health system. To all Kenyans—stand with us. A healthier nation starts with empowered and respected healthcare providers,” he concluded.
