The picturesque Borabu farms in Nyamira County, with their lush greenery, offer an inviting sight to visitors. However, the tranquility is shattered for residents who face fear and danger due to a surge in nighttime gang raids.
Over the past five months, these machete-wielding gangs have intensified their attacks, particularly in mid-December, targeting villages around the Mekenene area and the greater Nyansiongo villages. The escalation has left some houses deserted.
One victim, Nyansiongo Ward MCA Denis Kebaso, recounts a traumatic experience when the gang broke into his home on December 31st. They cut grills from windows, demanded money, and forced him to transfer funds from his Mpesa account. Later, they abducted him, withdrew money from banks, and left him stranded.
Obwagi Mogaka, a retiree residing in the Maziwa area, also fell victim to a similar raid, leaving him penniless. The masked thugs with machetes invaded his home at 11 PM, demanding money, and commandeered him to drive them away with stolen items.

Similar attacks targeted other residents, including Mzee Torori and Brian Sagini, grandson of late politician Sagini Ndemo. Borabu MP Patrick Osero criticized the police for their perceived inaction, calling for the transfer of officers who have overstayed in the area.
The lack of arrests and the gang’s audacity to transfer money to their Mpesa accounts raise concerns about the efficacy of the security agencies. Osero urged Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to take action and implement routine transfers of officers who have stayed in Borabu for more than four years.
