Operations at JKIA Disrupted Due to Jet Fuel Supply Issue

Nairobi, September 26, 2024 – Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were temporarily disrupted on Thursday morning following a supply disruption of Jet A-1 fuel.

The disruption affected several flights and caused delays, inconveniencing passengers and airline operations.

In a statement, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed that the issue had been resolved, and normal operations at the airport had resumed.

“The issue has been rectified, and normal airport operations have now resumed,” KAA stated. The authority apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers and airline partners, advising travelers to check with their respective airlines for any updates on their flights.

The disruption comes amid increased demand for jet fuel in the country. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that airlines in Kenya purchased 661,100 tonnes of jet fuel in 2023, an 11 percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge in fuel consumption reflects a significant recovery in air travel, both locally and internationally, following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aviation sector has been gradually recovering, with rising numbers of passengers and flights signalling the industry’s improved performance.

KAA has reassured passengers and stakeholders of their continued commitment to ensuring smooth airport operations.
