OpenAI’s o3 model has emerged victorious over Elon Musk’s Grok 4 in the final of an AI chess tournament, claiming the title of best artificial intelligence chess player.

Unlike traditional chess engines built specifically for the game, the competition featured general-purpose AI systems. OpenAI’s model went unbeaten, while Grok — previously seen as the strongest contender — faltered in the final, making repeated blunders, including losing its queen multiple times.
Google’s Gemini secured third place after defeating another OpenAI model.
The three-day event, hosted on Google-owned Kaggle, brought together eight large language models from companies including OpenAI, xAI, Google, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and Moonshot AI. The tournament used chess as a benchmark to test reasoning and strategy skills, echoing past milestones like DeepMind’s AlphaGo victories in Go and IBM’s Deep Blue triumph over Garry Kasparov in the 1990s.
Commentators, including grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, noted Grok’s collapse in form on the final day, allowing OpenAI to score a series of convincing wins.
Musk downplayed the loss, saying xAI had spent “almost no effort on chess,” describing Grok’s earlier success as a “side effect.”
