The family officially identified the body on Thursday, though the cause of death and the time of death are unclear. An autopsy is planned to determine how he died.

This development came as Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations Director Mohamed Amin appeared in court and denied that the missing men were in police custody. Mutumwa, along with Martin Mwau and Karani Muema, was reportedly abducted on December 16, 2024, and their whereabouts are still unknown. The missing persons’ reports were filed at the Mlolongo and Athi River Police Stations.

Kanja reassured the public in court that the country remains safe, especially during the holiday season, and emphasized that investigations into the missing persons are ongoing. He and Amin confirmed that the missing men are not in police custody and that no arrests have been made.

State Prosecutor Mark Baraza stated that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has instructed the Inspector General to investigate the abduction claims. The DPP is awaiting the results of the investigation into the matter.
