A Member of the Nyamira County Assembly has proposed a motion to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo, just under a year after a similar effort failed.
Wiper Party Nominated MCA Evans Matunda presented the motion on Tuesday, accusing the Governor of legal violations, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
This new impeachment attempt follows an unsuccessful bid in October 2023, led by Esise Ward MCA Josiah Mang’era of the ODM Party, who had also raised issues of mismanagement and legal infractions.
In that earlier motion, 16 MCAs voted for the Governor’s removal, while 18 opposed it. The motion needed a majority of 23 votes to meet the constitutional requirement for impeachment.
Governor Nyaribo, from the UPA Party, received crucial support from 18 MCAs who voted against the motion, giving him a reprieve.
The UPA Party had instructed its members to reject the impeachment motion and warned of disciplinary measures for those who defied the party’s directive.
A notification from the party read: “The party directs all UPA members of the Nyamira County Assembly to oppose and/or defeat the motion to remove H.E Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, Governor of Nyamira County.”
