According to the panel chair, Reuben Chirchir, the exercise attracted strong interest. A total of 79 individuals applied for the chairperson role, while 640 sought appointment as members of the commission.

After reviewing the applications, the panel shortlisted 13 candidates for the chairperson position and 109 for the members’ slots.

Interviews for the chairperson post will begin on March 2, with six candidates scheduled to appear before the panel from 10am on the first day. Those lined up include former Muhoroni MP Prof Ayiechio Olweny, Mohamud Saleh, Pamela Awino, Yufnalis Ndege, Abdirizak Hussein Shafat and Charity Ndung’u. The remaining seven candidates will be interviewed the next day.

Interviews for shortlisted members will start on March 4, 2026, and are expected to run until March 19. The sessions will be held at Harambee Avenue in Nairobi, running daily from 10am to 2.30pm.

Candidates have been directed to arrive at least 20 minutes before their scheduled time and to carry original identification documents, academic and professional certificates, transcripts and other testimonials.

They must also present valid clearance certificates from agencies including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), alongside clearance from a registered credit reference bureau.

Applicants with degrees from foreign universities are required to provide recognition letters from the Commission for University Education (CUE) and recommendations from relevant professional bodies where necessary.

The panel has also invited members of the public to submit sworn affidavits containing any credible information about the shortlisted candidates. Submissions should be sent via email or delivered to the Public Service Commission offices on Harambee Avenue by February 27.

The recruitment process is intended to reinforce the commission’s leadership as it continues its mandate of fostering national unity, peaceful coexistence, and tackling discrimination and hate speech nationwide.
