Narok: Security Measures Strengthened in Angata Barikoi Amid Ongoing Conflicts

Security has been intensified in Angata Barikoi, located in Trans Mara South Sub County, due to recurring clashes between two neighboring communities at the border of Narok and Migori counties.

During a visit to the area, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan reported that recent conflicts resulted in four fatalities, ten injuries, and significant damage to maize crops.

He attributed the violence to competition for agricultural land and grazing rights, as both communities engage in livestock rearing and farming.

“Police will conduct round-the-clock patrols to maintain peace in this region. We will also be coordinating with officials from the Nyanza region to find a lasting solution,” he stated.

Dr. Hassan warned that individuals found carrying weapons such as spears, arrows, and bows would face consequences during ongoing operations.

“Remember, carrying weapons is illegal. We have sufficient security personnel in place to ensure the safety of all residents,” he added.

He also cautioned public officials who incite violence between the communities, indicating they are under close observation.

Accompanied by the Rift Valley security team and County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, Dr. Hassan heard from local residents who expressed a desire for peaceful dialogues to reconcile the longstanding disputes.

Angata Barikoi Member of County Assembly Gabriel Mibei urged the RC to engage with his counterpart in Nyanza to address the ongoing tensions.

“We are eager to resolve the root causes of our conflicts and ask the RC to serve as a mediator between our communities,” he said.

This meeting follows a recent peace initiative led by Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu and Commissioner Lotiatia aimed at restoring harmony in the troubled region. The government has also established a General Service Unit (GSU) camp in the area to help mitigate the violence.
