Nakuru Court Orders Arrest of Uasin Gishu Governor and Three Others

A Nakuru Magistrate’s Court has issued an immediate arrest warrant for Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and three others.

Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ndege authorized the warrants for Bii, former Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor John Barorot, Edwin Bett, Hilary Ruto, and Stephen Lel after they failed to appear in court.

The individuals were expected to testify today in a case involving Uasin Gishu Senator Meshack Rono and two former county officials, Joshua Lelei and Meshack Rono, who face ten fraud-related charges. These charges include stealing Sh1.1 billion from parents through the fraudulent Finland Education Program, as well as conspiracy, theft, abuse of office, and forgery.

The prosecution alleges that the Sh1.1 billion, which was deposited into the Uasin Gishu Overseas Education Fund account, was misappropriated.

Prosecutor Angeline Chinga stated that the five witnesses had been formally summoned but did not show up as required. Defense attorneys criticized the absence of prosecution witnesses, highlighting the financial burden on their clients who traveled to Nakuru for a hearing that was postponed.

The magistrate has also summoned Mercy Tarus, a key witness, after the Investigating Officer reported difficulty in reaching her.
