Members of Parliament (MPs) are expected to introduce an ouster motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today, Tuesday, at 2:30 PM in the National Assembly.
Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah confirmed that the impeachment motion will be presented to the House.
For the motion to pass, it needs the support of 233 MPs, and reports indicate that 302 members have already signed in favor of it.
Gachagua’s critics argue that he has breached Article 10 of the Constitution, claiming his public statements have been inciteful, reckless, and capable of fostering ethnic animosity. He is also accused of violating Articles 147, 148, 174, 186, and 189, which pertain to his conduct and responsibilities as the President’s principal assistant.
Additionally, he faces allegations of unlawfully acquiring assets with taxpayer funds, reportedly located in Nyeri, Nairobi, and Kilifi counties.
If the motion passes, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula will notify Senate Speaker Amason Kingi within two days for further action.
Gachagua’s time in office has been marked by a contentious relationship with President William Ruto and some of his associates. This perceived divide has prompted Gachagua to caution those engaging in what he calls politics of betrayal, warning Ruto that proceeding with the impeachment could undermine his support in the Mt. Kenya region.
“I urge President Ruto to address these issues and let us focus on our duties. We have a mandate to fulfill for the Kenyan people, and we need to get to work,” he stated.
