MPs Return to Sessions After Month-Long Recess

Members of Parliament are set to resume their regular sessions today following a month-long recess.

The break was initiated after lawmakers approved a motion on August 7 to adjust their House calendar, leading to the recess starting on August 16.

Parliament will now reconvene for the Third Part of the Third Session before taking their extended December holiday.

Today’s agenda includes the presentation of reports from several committees. These include the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee’s audit on employment diversity in public institutions, and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives’ report on alleged unfair trade practices by foreign investors in Kenya.

Also up for discussion are Public Petition No. 4 of 2022 concerning expenditures by the National Government in violation of Article 223 of the Constitution, and the consolidated fund services for the supplementary estimates I for FY 2024/2025.

Additionally, the Equalisation Fund (Administration) Bill from the Senate is scheduled for its second reading.

On Wednesday, MPs will review a report from the joint committee of the National Assembly’s Administration and Internal Security and the Senate’s Internal Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations on the nomination of Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police.

This will be the final step in the appointment process, as the Senate has already approved his nomination. Acting IG Gilbert Masengeli has been serving in the role temporarily since the resignation of Japhet Koome on July 12, a position Kanja is poised to fill if approved.
