Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia has attributed the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)’s defeat in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election to growing voter dissatisfaction, saying repeated criticism of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua contributed to the outcome.
Speaking during an interview with a local media station on Monday, July 20, 2026, Muhia, who took part in the opposition campaign in the constituency, said leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration had consistently targeted the two Mount Kenya leaders, a move she believes alienated many voters in the region.

She said that although political differences existed during the 2022 General Election, many residents still hold Uhuru Kenyatta in high regard and were unhappy with what they viewed as continued attacks against him by government officials.
Muhia also referenced the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that subsequent criticism directed at the former deputy president further strengthened support for him among sections of the Mount Kenya electorate.
According to the legislator, the sustained criticism of both Uhuru and Gachagua contributed to increasing dissatisfaction in the region, which she believes was reflected in the results of the Ol Kalou by-election.
Voter frustrations reflect national concerns
Muhia further argued that the sentiments expressed by voters in Ol Kalou mirror the concerns being experienced by Kenyans in other parts of the country.

She said residents of the constituency face the same economic challenges affecting families in cities and towns such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Kitui and Nakuru, noting that many rural households depend on financial support from relatives working elsewhere.
According to the MP, the prevailing economic conditions have made it increasingly difficult for many families to meet essential expenses, including school fees and healthcare costs.
She maintained that the Ol Kalou by-election outcome reflected broader public dissatisfaction rather than concerns unique to the constituency.
