The Speaker of Mombasa, Aharub Khatri, is advocating for assembly sessions to be held directly at the grassroots level to ensure that residents’ voices are heard firsthand.
Khatri emphasized that certain areas, like Junda, have been neglected due to their remote location within the county. To address this, he suggested decentralizing assembly sessions to allow residents to express their concerns and aspirations directly to the assembly for action.
During a visit to Junda, Khatri expressed concern over the underrepresentation of such areas, emphasizing the significant responsibilities faced by local representatives like MCA Sylvester Kai, who often operate without the financial support available to MPs through the National Government Constituency Development Funds.
Despite Kai’s efforts, Khatri noted the perceived neglect of Junda, which is one of the largest and most densely populated wards in Kisauni subcounty.
Khatri’s proposal received support from Hassan Omar, the vice chair of UDA, who highlighted the importance of collaboration among MCAs from different political affiliations to expedite development projects. Omar praised Kai for fostering positive relationships within the assembly, which facilitates the passage of motions benefiting grassroots communities.

Ultimately, Khatri and Omar stressed that interpersonal relationships should translate into tangible benefits for the constituents, underscoring the need for meaningful partnerships geared towards community development.
