Miraa Driver Killed in Head-On Collision on Mwea–Embu Highway

A Probox driver carrying miraa was killed instantly in a head-on collision with a Canter lorry at Samson Corner along the busy Mwea–Embu Highway on Friday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The lorry driver, Nicolas Murithi, said he was travelling from Nairobi to Chuka when he encountered three Probox vehicles heading towards Nairobi at high speed, all loaded with miraa. While two of the vehicles safely passed, the third collided directly with his lorry, killing the driver on the spot. Murithi expressed shock at the reckless speed of the Probox.

The crash also involved a boda boda rider transporting his wife and child. Both adults were rushed to hospital by ambulance, while the child escaped uninjured.

Local residents, led by Dan Murango, condemned the growing number of accidents along the highway. Witness Dan Mwai from Murinduko highlighted a worrying pattern, noting that several fatal crashes had occurred in the area in recent days.

“Two people, a man and his wife, were killed at Difathas yesterday, and another person died at Nyangati. What is happening?” he questioned.

The incident sparked further outrage when another miraa-laden vehicle reportedly arrived and removed the cargo from the wrecked Probox, leaving the deceased driver’s body behind.

“These people value miraa more than human life. They took the miraa but left the body,” said resident Joseph Karanja.

Traffic police from Wang’uru Police Station responded to the scene, moved the body to a mortuary for identification, and towed the involved vehicles as investigations into the crash continue.
