Millions Affected as Equity Bank Faces Major System Glitch

Equity Bank Kenya has announced a temporary interruption in its bank-to-mobile wallet transfer services, affecting customers who use the platform for everyday financial transactions.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 25, 2025, the bank said the disruption was due to a system issue impacting transfers from bank accounts to mobile money platforms.

“We are currently experiencing a service interruption affecting bank-to-mobile wallet transactions. Our technical team is working to restore services as soon as possible,” read the notice.

The lender apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured customers that normal operations would resume once the issue is resolved.

Equity also cautioned customers to beware of fraudsters who might exploit the situation by posing as bank officials. The bank reminded clients that all official communication comes from its verified number — 0763 000 000 — and urged them not to share sensitive banking details such as PINs, passwords, or one-time passwords (OTPs).

The disruption comes at a time when millions of Kenyans depend heavily on mobile money services like M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and T-Kash for payments, transfers, and withdrawals.

Equity’s bank-to-mobile wallet feature allows users to send money directly from their accounts to mobile money platforms in real time, providing convenient access without the need to visit a branch or ATM.

The temporary outage may cause delays in such transactions until the system is fully restored.

Equity Bank, one of the region’s largest financial institutions, operates in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a representative office in Ethiopia. The bank says its mission is to promote financial inclusion and empower individuals, businesses, and communities through accessible financial solutions.
