Met Department Warns of Heavy Rains in Several Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a public alert warning that rainfall currently being experienced across the country will intensify both in amount and spread from Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5, 2025.

According to the forecast, heavy downpours are expected in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western, and North-Western Kenya.

The advisory cautions that some areas may record between 20mm and 50mm of rain in 24 hours, with isolated spots likely to experience more than 50mm. Such conditions could trigger localized flooding, slippery roads, and general disruptions.

Residents, motorists, and travelers have been urged to remain cautious, avoid flooded areas, and make informed decisions when planning movement or outdoor activities. Pedestrians are advised not to walk through floodwaters or open drains, while motorists should watch out for reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.

The department also noted that October marks the start of the short rains season, which is crucial for farming but often comes with risks such as flash floods, poor urban drainage in cities like Nairobi, and landslides in highland or deforested areas.

Counties and disaster response teams in flood-prone regions have been asked to stay on high alert, while farmers are warned that rural access roads and harvesting activities may be disrupted.

Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu are forecast to experience occasional showers that may affect ferry services and low-lying settlements. In contrast, North-Eastern Kenya—including Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera—along with parts of Kitui and Tana River, are expected to remain largely dry, with residents urged to manage water resources carefully.

The Met Department reiterated that it is closely monitoring weather patterns and will provide regular updates. The public is encouraged to follow official advisories from the department, Kenya Red Cross, and local authorities for preparedness and safety.
