The suspect, 38-year-old Richard Kigen, was apprehended following a tip-off to Sotik Township Assistant Chief, Madam Emma, who alerted the local police after residents in Chemagel and Kimase raised concerns over suspicious meat being sold.
Police say an operation led to the recovery of roughly 15 kilograms of red meat, believed to be from a dog, which was found packed in plastic gunny bags. The suspect reportedly intended to sell it as regular meat without disclosing its origin.
Upon interrogation, Kigen confessed to the act, admitting he had planned to distribute the meat to the public.
The County Veterinary Department has taken samples of the meat for further testing to confirm its source. Meanwhile, Kigen remains in custody and is set to face charges under the Meat Control Act (CAP 356) for slaughtering an undeclared animal, as well as animal cruelty.
Authorities have urged the public to be cautious and to only purchase meat from licensed and verified outlets as investigations into the incident continue.
