Top 10 Best Universities in Africa 2026 Revealed

African universities are steadily strengthening their global reputation, thanks to improved research output, stronger international partnerships, and growing academic influence.

According to Business Insider Africa, higher education institutions across the continent are gaining increased recognition as African governments invest in knowledge-driven economies and work to attract international students and researchers. Global university rankings have therefore become an important benchmark for measuring academic excellence and competitiveness.

The latest 2026-2027 Best Global Universities Rankings by US News & World Report assessed institutions based on research performance, global reputation, and regional academic influence.

The report reveals that South Africa and Egypt continue to dominate higher education in Africa, accounting for nine of the continent’s top ten universities. Nigeria’s University of Ibadan is the only institution from West Africa to secure a place in the top 10, underscoring both its long-standing academic reputation and the limited representation of the region.

The University of Cape Town retained its position as Africa’s highest-ranked university, reflecting South Africa’s leadership in research, academic collaboration, and international recognition.

Overall, the rankings demonstrate that while only a handful of African universities are making a strong mark globally, the continent continues to expand its investment in higher education, research capacity, and international collaboration, laying the foundation for greater global competitiveness in the years ahead.
