According to police, the incident began after officers intercepted a suspected stolen Toyota Vitz at a Shell petrol station along Thika Road in Juja. Rather than surrendering, the driver allegedly sped away, prompting a high-speed chase.

Witnesses said officers fired at the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to stop it, but the suspect continued driving on damaged rims for nearly three kilometres towards Juja Farm’s Muigai Inn area.

The chase ended in a confrontation that escalated into a shootout, during which the suspect was fatally wounded.

Following the incident, officers recovered a mini-pistol and several rounds of ammunition from the vehicle. Police noted that the compact firearm is often used in criminal activities because it can be easily concealed.

Juja Sub-County Police Commander Isaac Kombo said the Toyota Vitz was bearing registration number KBU 988E, but preliminary investigations indicate the plates may belong to another vehicle. Detectives are now verifying the vehicle’s identity using its chassis number.

Police also revealed that Kimani had previously been identified as a person of interest in investigations into a wider vehicle theft syndicate being pursued by a multi-agency security team.

His body was taken to a mortuary for post-mortem and forensic examinations as detectives continue investigating the incident and the suspected car theft network.
