Makueni: Police Officer Shoots Colleague Dead

A tragic incident unfolded in Makueni County as an Administration Police (AP) officer from the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) in Mbooni West stands accused of shooting his colleague to death on Friday.

Constable Anthony Mariapei, the suspect, and Hassan Ahmed, the deceased, were both on duty guarding the office of the Mbooni West Deputy County Commissioner when the fatal incident occurred during the night.

The sound of gunshots was heard by a police officer stationed at the report office of Mbooni Police Station, located a mere 40 meters away from the Deputy County Commissioner’s office. This officer immediately alerted others, who swiftly rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, they discovered a police officer in an APS uniform, squatting beside a G3 rifle, and bleeding from a gunshot wound on the left side of the ribs. Tragically, it was soon confirmed that the officer had succumbed to his injuries.

Shortly after, Mariapei voluntarily presented himself at Mbooni Police Station, where he reportedly confessed to shooting Ahmed.

According to the police report, Mariapei, an officer attached to CIPU Mbooni West and on night guard duty at the DCC’s office, surrendered, claiming responsibility for firing the fatal shot.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the accused officer has been detained pending further investigations. Both G3 rifles issued to Mariapei and Ahmed, loaded with 18 and 20 rounds respectively, have been seized as evidence awaiting ballistic examinations.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to Mbooni West Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
