Safaricom PLC has notified customers of a scheduled M-Pesa system maintenance set for Monday, September 22, 2025, between 12:30 am and 3:30 am.
The company explained that the three-hour exercise aims to boost the platform’s reliability, security, and overall performance.

“Over the past 18 years, M-Pesa has transformed lives by connecting millions of customers to opportunities. To keep delivering safe and seamless financial services, we will be carrying out this scheduled upgrade during the early hours of September 22,” Safaricom stated.
During the maintenance period, all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchases, will be temporarily unavailable.
Safaricom assured customers that the timing was chosen to reduce inconvenience and apologised in advance, urging users to complete transactions before the upgrade window.
The telco also thanked Kenyans for their loyalty, reaffirming its commitment to delivering innovative financial and digital solutions.
M-Pesa, which recently marked its 18th anniversary, has grown to serve over 70 million customers in more than 170 countries. In Kenya alone, it has empowered 32.1 million users, supporting financial inclusion from 26.7% in 2006 to 83.7% in 2021.

As of 2024, the platform had generated more than Sh139.9 billion in revenue and expanded its network to over one million businesses and agents across Africa, including in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, the DRC, Lesotho, Ghana, and Egypt.
