Look Up TV has announced the closure of its newsroom after six years of being in operation. Effective from Friday, June 7, both its Swahili and English news broadcasts will cease.
The shutdown will result in the termination of over 100 employees’ positions, including correspondents, reporters, anchors, and members of the sales team.
The owners of the station pointed to high taxation and shifting media landscapes as the primary reasons behind this decision.
While broadcast operations will halt, Look Up TV will maintain its digital platforms, with staff members working remotely from home.
The affected employees will receive tokens of appreciation for their contributions.
A company memo stated, “By the end of this month, our operations will officially conclude. Tokens of appreciation will be distributed to all employees, and we will remain connected.”
In August 2022, Look Up TV made waves by hiring veteran news anchor Louis Otieno, who hosted prime-time news from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, deviating from the typical 9 pm slot used by other media outlets.
In recent years, Look Up TV has encountered significant financial challenges, prompting substantial budget cuts in an effort to remain viable.
