Lightning Strike Kills Woman in Trans Nzoia

A 66-year-old woman, Beatrice Kunikina, died instantly after being struck by lightning in Ndege Village, Kwanza Sub-County, Trans Nzoia, on October 1, 2025.

Police said the tragedy happened while she was in her kitchen preparing supper during a heavy downpour. Her body was later moved to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem as burial plans get underway.

Residents have since called for measures to help prevent similar incidents.

Bee attack kills man in Homa Bay

In Oyugis, Homa Bay County, a man believed to be mentally ill was stung to death by bees after provoking a swarm on October 1. Locals and police said the insects turned on him, leaving him dead at the scene. His body was taken to the local mortuary.

Toddler drowns in Nairobi

In Harambee Estate, Buruburu, Nairobi, a one-year, two-month-old girl drowned in a bucket of water outside her home. The child, who had been left under her grandmother’s care, was found submerged by a relative. Despite being rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. Police said no visible injuries were found on the body and investigations are ongoing.

Suicide case in Elgeyo Marakwet

Separately, a 25-year-old man, Charles Kabiru Njenga, was found dead in his brother’s house at Elgeyo Forest Station, Elgeyo Marakwet County, in what police described as a suicide. The motive remains unclear.

Authorities have raised concern over the rising cases of suicide in the country, most of which involve men. Experts link the trend to factors such as unemployment, family conflicts, depression, substance abuse, and financial struggles. The government says it is working on strategies to curb the crisis.
