For his contribution, Kirwa was named the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for September. The award was presented in Nairobi on Thursday, recognizing his tactical acumen, leadership, and ability to inspire athletes. He beat top coaches from other sports disciplines to claim the honour.

Expressing gratitude after receiving the award, Kirwa said: “Thank you very much for recognising my work, and I hope going forward we will work even harder to achieve similar success.” He also praised the private sector for supporting sports through sponsorship.

Kenya’s medal haul in Tokyo was marked by standout performances. Beatrice Chebet secured two gold medals, while Peres Jepchirchir extended her road-racing dominance. Faith Kipyegon lived up to expectations with victory in the women’s 1500m, adding another global crown to her decorated career.

Faith Cherotich set a championship record of 8:51.59 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Emmanuel Wanyonyi triumphed in the men’s 800m, and Lilian Odira capped Kenya’s campaign with a dramatic win in the women’s 800m, clocking 1:54.62 for another championship record.

Kirwa’s recognition comes amid growing calls for greater investment in local coaches through training, incentives, and structured support to keep pace with the competitiveness of world athletics.
