Several women have committed suicide in Sudan’s central Gezira state after being raped by military fighters in the country’s brutal civil war, human rights groups and activists have said.
The reports come after RSF militants were accused by the United Nations of “brutal crimes”, including genocide, in the province last week.
As the RSF fighters continue to advance, a human rights organization has told the BBC that it is in contact with six women who are considering suicide as they fear sexual abuse.
But RSF has dismissed a recent UN report alleging increased sexual abuse of its fighters, telling the BBC that the accusations were “unsubstantiated”.
Fierce struggles for power between RSF militants have killed tens of thousands of people and forced more than 11 million people to leave their homes since the conflict began in April 2023.
The head of the United Nations World Food Program, Cindy McCain, visited the Port Sudan aid station this week, and told the BBC that the country could face the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world if a ceasefire is not reached.
He warned that millions of people could die of starvation.
