Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney won an early election victory on Tuesday, following a campaign marred by the issue of high trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Carney of the Liberal Party has officially won his first seat in parliament.
In his victory speech, Carney accused Donald Trump of trying to “divide” Canada with a trade war.
“Trump is trying to divide us so that America can own us and vows to never let that happen,” Carney said.
He told the crowd that “the old partnership with the United States is now over”, and that Canada has now accepted what has become “American betrayal”.
He promised to strengthen cooperation with other European countries and beyond.
“If the United States no longer wants to be at the forefront of world leadership, Canada will be,” he told a cheering crowd on his trip to Nepean, Ontario.
On the other hand, Conservative candidate Poilievre said his party had learned “hard lessons” in this election, and assured supporters that the Conservatives and Liberals would work together “to confront the issue of tariffs and other threats” from Trump.
