Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe on Wednesday welcomed officials from the national Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to his office boardroom in Kitui for a strategic meeting.
The discussions centered around the upcoming launch of the Day of the African Child (DAC), scheduled for June 9, 2024, at Ithookwe Primary School. This significant event will be presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
The Day of the African Child, celebrated annually on June 16, commemorates the 1976 Soweto children’s uprising. This year, the national celebration will be graced by First Lady Rachael Ruto in Taita Taveta.
The selection of Kitui as the host for this year’s DAC launch reflects the county’s impressive 98% transition rate from childhood to primary school and the notable resilience of its learners.
“The choice of Kitui underscores our commitment to ensuring every child receives a quality education and recognizes the strides we’ve made in supporting our young learners,” said Governor Malombe.

The Day of the African Child serves as an important occasion to celebrate the achievements in realizing the rights of African children, as outlined in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

It also aims to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges children face across the continent.
This year’s event will provide a platform to highlight both the progress made and the obstacles that remain in improving the lives of African children, ensuring their rights are upheld and their futures are bright.
