KeNHA Threatens Demolition Spree Over Unauthorized Billboards

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to individuals and companies with unauthorized billboards along national roads, directing them to take down the structures or risk enforcement measures.

In a notice published in a local newspaper, KeNHA raised alarm over the persistent encroachment onto road reserves along major highways, warning that such structures pose safety risks to road users.

KeNHA acting Director General Luka Kimeli stated that, in accordance with Sections 49 and 50 of the Kenya Roads Act, 2007, the Authority is empowered to regulate roadside developments and remove any illegal constructions, advertisements, billboards, or directional signs placed within its road reserves.

He further directed that all owners of unapproved, expired, or otherwise unlawful billboards and related structures must clear them within 30 days from the notice date.

KeNHA cautioned that failure to comply will result in enforcement actions—including demolition and cost recovery—without any additional communication to the owners or their representatives.
