The Kenya Editors Guild has postponed its annual general meeting (AGM) and elections after failing to meet the required quorum.
The AGM’s main agenda—the elections—could not proceed, as the necessary two-thirds membership threshold had not been met, according to the Guild’s secretariat.
“The rules demand a two-thirds quorum, which we haven’t reached,” the returning officer stated. “Unless members are willing to wait and rally others, I recommend we don’t proceed.”
The Guild’s Executive Council will convene to set a new election date within the next 30 days.
The presidential race had drawn considerable interest, with veteran journalists Zubeidah Kananu and Yvonne Okwara vying for the top seat.
Kananu, the current president and the first woman to hold the role, was running for a second term.
The presidential contest was anticipated to be one of the most competitive in KEG’s history.
In other roles, Francis Openda of Radio Africa Group was declared Vice President unopposed. Council positions also went uncontested to Linda Bach (Print Media), Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online Media), and Millicent Awuor (Television).
The Radio category featured a contest between Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi, while the Academia category saw Nathan Nayere Masambu competing against Julius Ombui Bosire.
For Trustee roles, Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a were validly nominated and automatically elected.
As per section 4.3 of the KEG Election Guidelines, the Returning Officer confirmed that all uncontested candidates (items 1 to 5) were officially elected to the Council.
