Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday paid a profound traditional tribute to his late political ally Raila Odinga, delivering about 100 cattle to the Odinga family’s Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County.
The gesture, steeped in cultural symbolism, reflected Kalonzo’s deep respect and admiration for the late former Prime Minister, whose death on October 15 sparked national mourning and tributes from around the world.

Kalonzo, carrying a spear and shield, led a delegation that included Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, several governors, and MPs from the Ukambani region, as they entered the Odinga homestead to the resounding chants of “Jowi! Jowi!” — a Luo expression traditionally used to honour a great warrior.

According to Luo customs, visiting the home of a departed leader with cattle is part of a sacred ceremony known as Tero Buru, a ritual meant to ward off evil spirits and cleanse the home following a death. The offering of bulls signifies the deceased’s courage, influence, and high standing in the community.

Raila, who was laid to rest on October 19 after a state funeral attended by dignitaries from across Kenya and abroad, continues to inspire emotional tributes and traditional honours.

Kalonzo’s offering follows similar gestures by other regional leaders. On October 17, a delegation of Kalenjin leaders presented 80 bulls to the Odinga family — one for each year of Raila’s life — symbolising unity between the Luo and Kalenjin communities.

Ahead of the burial, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa delivered 15 cows and several bags of maize, calling it a “humble token” of gratitude for Raila’s lifelong fight for democracy and national unity.

Natembeya said the gesture also mirrored Raila’s own act in 2003, when he took bulls to Kitale to honour the late Vice President Michael Wamalwa Kijana during his funeral.
Other Western leaders, including Busia Governor Paul Otuoma and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, also presented bulls to the Odinga family before the burial.
“We loved and respected Rt. Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga,” Osotsi said. “Our communities came together to honour him in a traditional way befitting his legacy.”
