Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper party, has issued a warning of nationwide protests if the proposed removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome comes to fruition. Speaking at a church service in Muthara, Tigania East, Meru County on Sunday, Kalonzo disclosed his awareness of a petition filed in court seeking Koome’s ousting, considering it a direct assault on the Judiciary.
During his address, Kalonzo asserted, “We will protest from Maua, Seikuru, Meru, and beyond. We will not allow that; you cannot do that. That is the final stronghold of our freedom.”
Expressing concerns about a compromised parliament, Kalonzo urged opposition legislators to challenge any proposal that appears to obstruct the will of the Kenyan people. The petition to remove Koome was initiated by Michael Kojo Otieno, who alleged that the Chief Justice violated the law in appointing members to the tax appeal tribunal.
According to Kojo, Koome’s actions lacked transparency and diligence, accusing her of discriminating against applicants for the board positions. The petition contends, “While appointing persons to serve at the tax appeal tribunal, the judge failed to be honest in the execution of powers conferred to her by the Tax Appeal Tribunal Act based on powers conferred to the judge as a judicial officer… The actions of the chief justice in appointing members more than the stipulated requirement violated section 4b of the Tax Appeal Tribunal Act.”
