Justina Syokau: Ex Bought Me a Fake Ring

Gospel singer Justina Syokau has revealed that her former partner once bought her an engagement ring worth just Ksh300, leaving everyone around them stunned.

Speaking to Alex Mwakideu on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Justina said the gesture happened unexpectedly during a weekend outing, and she had no idea it was coming.

“He took me out that weekend and bought me a ring on River Road. I didn’t know it was River Road — you know, I wasn’t very familiar with Nairobi,” she recounted.

“Dubois bought me a ring for three hundred shillings. I went back and asked — it was fake,” she added.

She described the shock of everyone around them: “Everyone was like, ‘Wait, you’re engaged? He met me Friday, and by Saturday it’s an engagement.’ Everyone was shocked,” Justina said, noting how sudden it all felt.

At first, she said, it all felt like a movie.

“You think it’s normal, but it’s like a scene from a film. And someone who wants to marry you won’t show any red flags — every flag is white,” she explained.

She also admitted her ex seemed smart and knew how to read her.

“People say you can read someone, but where would you read this one? He understood me, knew I was young and naive. He was good at calculating moves,” Justina said.

She recalled how he appeared eager to get married.

“Every time we went out, we ended up at his home. He even introduced me to his mother. The next weekend we went to my home,” she added.

Justina said even her grandmother had reservations about her age.

“My grandma said I was too young to marry. I wasn’t even 20 yet — I was 19 going on 20 — and he was 34. Grandma thought it was too much. They were shocked too,” she said.

She admitted that at the time, she didn’t think about such things, saying: “I was young; he was older. Now I understand these things. I had to be careful. I was rejected by people who mattered, and I said no.”

Justina described the engagement as a mix of excitement, surprise, and youthful naivety.
