The burial of Kenyan volleyball legend Janet Wanja has been tentatively set for January 3, 2025.
According to Charles Nyaberi, President of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the service will take place at Lang’ata High School, followed by her interment at Lang’ata Cemetery in Nairobi.
A memorial service for Wanja is scheduled for January 2, 2025, at the Kasarani Indoor Gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., though the venue is still awaiting final confirmation. The burial committee convened for its first meeting on Sunday at the Sportsview Hotel to finalize the details.
Wanja, who passed away on Friday after a battle with stage four gallbladder cancer, was a prominent figure in Kenya’s volleyball scene.
A former setter for the national women’s team, she represented Kenya at major tournaments, including the Athens Olympic Games. Her most recent role was as a trainer for the Malkia Strikers, and her final contribution to the national team was during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she helped improve Kenya’s performance from the Tokyo 2021 Games.
The volleyball community and several prominent leaders, including President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, have paid tribute to Wanja. They lauded her dedication, hard work, and pride in representing Kenya, qualities that underscored her love for the sport.
