The Ministry of Health (MoH) has confirmed the disbursement of Ksh.1.75 billion to cover doctors’ and medical interns’ outstanding salaries and allowances that have been pending since 2016.
The payment addresses a portion of the total arrears, which had accumulated to Ksh.3.5 billion over the years.
Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health, revealed the update during a visit to Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, on Saturday.
She stated that the government had successfully cleared Ksh.1.75 billion, a part of the arrears tied to the 2016 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and is committed to continuing discussions with the health workforce.
“We have cleared Ksh.1.75 billion owed to doctors, which covers the period from the 2016 CBA to this year. We will keep working closely with them, as our health workers are extremely important to us,” PS Muthoni remarked.
In addition to the salary arrears for doctors, the PS confirmed that medical interns would also receive their pending payments this month, and assured that the government would not deduct any amounts owed to them, as per the agreement with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
