Illegal Cigarettes Worth KSh281M Confiscated at Mombasa Port

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confiscated more than 9.3 million illegal cigarettes valued at KSh281.1 million at the Port of Mombasa.

The seizure involved a 40-foot container, intercepted following intelligence reports, and a multi-agency team was assembled to verify the consignment.

Due to the nature of the cargo, authorities conducted a full physical inspection to ensure compliance with tax, standards, and enforcement regulations. The operation involved officers from KRA, Port Police, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA), Port Health Services, and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

The inspection revealed 937 cartons containing 9,370,000 cigarette sticks. Although labeled “Made in Sudan,” the consignment originated from Cambodia, passed through Singapore, and was destined for South Sudan. Taxes on the shipment total KSh83,393,000, including KSh38,417,000 in Excise Duty and KSh44,976,000 in Value Added Tax (VAT).

KRA said the interception highlights its commitment to border security, protecting society and legitimate traders from illicit goods, safeguarding national revenue, and promoting fair market competition.
